What does the End of Support Mean?
- ·When support ends, Magento 1 websites will become vulnerable to security threats and no further features or innovations will be added. This means the continued security of your customers and your business would be at risk.
- Most payment gateways require a PCI compliance scan to be performed on your website. With no proper security patches and security monitoring, your store could not pass the PCI scans, meaning that you won’t be able to take credit cards in as little as 90-days after support has ended.
- Handling security on your own is an expensive and difficult task. Instead, it is wiser to choose another platform and eliminate the task of maintaining your own security and save money.
- New extensions are not made anymore for Magento 1.
- There are approximately 250,000 sites currently operating on a version of Magento 1 and all of these Magento 1 sites will need to evaluate their strategy, ideally before June 2020. For example, there are about 350 Magento Partners worldwide who are equipped to handle a migration off Magento 1 onto one of the other Magento offerings. Doing the maths, that means each SI would need to complete 714 re-platforms in the next six months – which is simply beyond the capacity of the partner network.
But before we dive in, let’s premise this by saying that we’re not in the business of scaremongering. It’s important for any existing Magento 1.9 customers to be fully aware that their online stores aren’t going to spontaneously combust come June 2020. Instead, we’re going to lay out the facts:
- All Magento 1 support and updates will cease in June 2020
- PHP 5.6 (aka the scripting software for Magento 1) has already expired
- While Magento 1.9 can run with newer versions of PHP, not all existing extensions are going to play ball
- Thus this current dilemma for businesses. Staying put on Magento 1.9 might be somewhat possible in theory, but in practice, it’s simply not a long-term option for any online business.

How quickly can I re-platform?
- In short, not very quickly, as even the most basic Magento websites would need time to transition. You need to start your action plan asap. The transition period depends on the complexity of your store, the extensions you are using and the skills of your developer team.
